New SSL light sources have led to a revolution in the automotive industry. First, with the achievement of consistent white color temperatures and also with the constant luminance increase of new LEDs, Solid State Lighting is rapidly penetrating the automotive market. In this field, LEDs offer unique styling possibilities, low power consumption, long lifetime and compactness. However, they face important challenges, such as low luminance (especially when compared with HID lamps), uneven colors, price and the heat removal. LPI offers striking-style solutions that not only manage these drawbacks, but go far beyond.

Due to the important impact of the low and high beam functions, both on car aesthetics and safety, the OEM’s demands go far beyond regulations. They constitute one of the most challenging designs in illumination technology and one of the toughest that LPI’s design methods can face. As an example, LPI worked with GM to develop the first LED low beam mock up in the year of 2001 and has designed and prototyped several low beam head lamps since then.  The last of these has broken all performance records, achieving outstanding performance features like those of HID-lamps.

LPI designs offer competitive options for other functions as well, such as CHMSLs (Center High Mounted Stop Lights) and DRLs (daytime running lights).  These are less demanding functions that permit LPI to show its skills as well, aided by compactness, efficiency and the resulting cost savings, as well as styling.

Besides efficiency and performance, the free-form aesthetics possible with the 3D SMS design method are very appreciated in the field.
